Christmas Crafts and Decor

Time is limited folks! I am smack in the middle of pre-Christmas-Sunday-Family-Holiday-Programming!!! But I wanted to share some of my Christmas Crafts and Decor with you!!!grape vine star

I was going to do this with driftwood, but I didn’t get a chance to scour the beaches yet for my driftwood stockpile, so I used some dried grape vine I had from an old arrangement. Jeff claims it’s a little Blair-Witchy, but I say Christmas Star all the way!

Next, I found THIS on pinterest, and had to give it a go. People always scoff when I say I save my corks to someday make a project, but to all those scoffers: how do ya like ‘dem wreathes!?cork wreath

I was going to document making this as a buoy bird craft, but the camera settings were all wonky and even after photoshop lightening the pics were STILL this dark!

Eh, no biggie, instructions here! :)

Next was one of my favorite 2011 decorations. I found the most BEAUTIFUL hand cut paper snowflakes that my ridiculously talented friend Joanna made me a few years back, and I always wanted a special way to display them.

These babies deserved to be in a giant frame (found roadside in ol’ TO years ago)!

Some 1/2 off flowers for a cheery Christmas arrangement, a Tree, and I dare say we are ready for Christmas around these parts!

Or at the very least, the Christmas Party we had this past Friday! Stay tuned to see how that turned out!

ps: MUCH love to my sweet boyfriend for making my blog “snow” yet again this Holiday season :) xo

October 10th, 2011 – YEARLY love!!!

Wow, one year already guys. Time flies, huh? I am so happy that you found each other and that you are sharing a beautiful life together :) Your love can be clearly seen in your happiness, life, and adventures.

I totally forgot that Matt and Kim’s one year anniversary would fall right around the same time of Jeff and I becoming first time homeowners, so unfortunately this post can’t be as tricked out as I would have liked for a one year celebration. However, we could not let an occasion like this pass us by.

matt and kims peggys coveJeff and I took a drive out to Peggy’s Cove today (only 10 kms from our new home!), so I thought I’d share one of Matt and Kim’s amazing shots of this beauteous place.

Matt and Kim, when you get home from Italy (!!!), you will have to come have a proper celebratory beverage with us overlooking the Atlantic. Jeff and I wish you all the best as you enter your second year of marriage: we just know it will be as wonderful as the first.

*side note: Stay tuned for upcoming posts on *the move*, *the move-in*, and life-beginning-again in Nova Scotia. We can’t wait to share our journey with you!

September 10th, 2011 – monthly love

Hello to you all! If you are still visiting I owe you a HUGE thank you; I know my contact has been lacking as of late, but I promise there is good reason for that. And that it will soon change. Stay tuned…

Well, it is the 11 month anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Madden’s first year of matrimonial loooove. A whole year in only one more month guys: you must be over the moon :)

I unfortunately don’t have a boatload of time to post today, but I couldn’t miss celebrating M+K’s 11th month with a perfect picture of theirs. The summer days are certainly winding down here in ol’ TO, and this photo reminded me of the nostalgic last days of summer.

last days of summerSqueeze in one last bbq if it’s getting chilly in your parts folks; only so many sun-filled evenings before we bunk down for cooler days.

Happy “Anniversary” Matt and Kim! Can’t wait to celebrate the ONE YEAR mark with a post next month!

August 10th, 2011 – monthly love

*sings* Happy Anniversary, Happy Anniversary, Happy Anniversary, Haaa-ppy Anniversary!

If you know me, you’ll know the exact tune/level of enthusiasm to which I sing that little ditty. And so what if it’s only Matt and Kim’s “month anniversary” (10 to be exact!); month anniversaries warrant made-up songs… Whereas annual anniversaries warrant presents ;)

This month I was dead set on putting together another maddenvallis wedding photo post. Seriously, these two have upped their game this summer, and you just have to see the totally amazing, wicked awesome work they are doing. Remember how I said one day I want them to shoot my wedding? Well multiply that “want” by 1000, and you’ll get how bad I want these two capturing my day o’ love (when it comes :) ).

While flicking around, I realized Matt and Kim already did the majority of my work by picking some great shots with which they made their flashcards and social media profile pics. Or maybe they were just watermarking their shots. Either way, I think these pics + branding = perfect perfect perfect. I think it shows exactly the kind of work that Matt and Kim are doing, their personal style, and their rediiiiculous talent. So without further ado…maddenvallis willow tree kiss

maddenvallis cliff kissmaddenvallis veil kissmaddenvallis young lovemaddenvallis boardwalk kissmaddenvallis bridge kissAre you jealous of all the people in those pics who got the chance to work with such amazing photographers? Cuz I am! If you have a wedding/engagement/anything that you want captured coming up, I HIGHLY recommend you get in touch with Matt and Kim, because with work like this, I bet they’ll end up booked solid! Jeff and I were lucky enough to meet up with Matt and Kim along with another affianced pair of friends while we were house hunting recently in NS (more on that later), but we didn’t get to do much catching up due to our love-bird friends being aflutter about potentially working with Matt and Kim in 2012! So M+K, next time it’s you and us, and hours and hours for nerd-talk, wine, and good food :)

July 11th, 2011 – monthly love

Eep! A day late! Matt and Kim, I know you’ll understand. I was distracted with thoughts of COMING HOME dancing in my head!

That’s right, I’m heading back to ol’ NS (for a visit/house hunting) in only 3 days, and I will finally get to sit down for a bevvie with Matt and Kim for the first time since we started collaborating: WOO!!!

In honor of our much anticipated trip home, this month’s M+K post focuses on one of the most beautiful places in this whole world and how beautifully Kim and Matt photograph it: The Cape Breton Highlands.

Sit back and enjoy the scenery; words can’t describe.

Seriously, have you ever seen a more beautiful place? I’ve said for years that I am SO happy that Matt and Kim capture all the wonder and beauty that Cape Breton and all of Nova Scotia has to offer, as it’s been a touchstone for me during my years away in the “Big Smoke”. But now, moving home, I’ll be even more happy to appreciate it first hand, and maybe even with these fabulous photographers by my side.

Happy Nine Months Matt and Kim! We’ll see you next week! :)

June 10th, 2011 – monthly love

AH HA! Did you think I would miss two months!? Not a chance!

A HUGE apology to my lovely friends Matt and Kim: I’ve led them to trust that they would get special BB love on the 10th of every month, and what did I go and do? I forgot last month. Bad, bad friend am I. Love me still? :)

To make up for it I will share LOTS of M+K pics today, all based around my favorite spring/summer 2011 color: YELLOW!yellow barnyellow dykesyellow vineyard

See, this is the thing about Nova Scotia and the country side: dandelions can be a thing of beauty! I’ll always remember while growing up driving past the old church out in East Bay (ya with me Matt and Kim?) and seeing a field full of dandelions, and thinking never have I seen a more stunning expanse of *weeds*. I get that they are parasites for lawns ’round the world, but when you see ’em en masse like that, you can’t deny that yellow, sunny beauty.yellow houseyellow barn2yellow shoes

If you’ve ever seen the commercials for the maritime provinces, you’ll have noticed that we like to take a cue from Mother Nature’s color palette and splash our houses, boats, and lives with her bright colors.yellow canoeyellow shopyellow bus

Isn’t it great how Matt and Kim capture the happiness that is *yellow* against the epic, mysterious beauty that is Nova Scotia? There is something both stirring and settling about the juxtaposition. And although I don’t know how they manage to capture this perfect balance, I sure am happy that they do.yellow house2

i *heart* 406 media

23 days!? Really? It’s really been 23 days since I last updated Buoy Bird!? Shame. On. Me. I’m sorry BB followers; I could offer you a plethora of excuses, ranging from general pre-summer blah to spending most online hours house hunting, but I will simply ask for your forgiveness. I *heart* you!

But, as the title states, I too *heart* 406 media! I mean, sure I’m biased, its owner being my boyfriend/best friend/all around awesome guy, but hear me out! My man took the leap less than a year ago to become a self-employed sole proprietor, pursuing his *second true love of web nerd-ery, and he hasn’t looked back. Going out on your own takes ridiculous bravery, skill, and determination, and Jeff has not been short in any of these areas. And it’s paid off! His client list and portfolio speaks for itself, and he daily wakes up to a girlfriend grumbling about the fact that he gets to stay in the nice warm house while she trudges out into a rainy May day.

Seeing as our residence IS also Jeff’s place of employ, I figured we needed to mark it as such. I decided to make him a little treat.the beginning

Off to Michael’s I went with no more than a destination: the route was to be inspired by whatever the shelves had to offer.paintspaint mixed

After much time, money, and drool, I finally made it out alive. Seriously, our *house down payment fund* is lucky that Michael’s is two subway rides and a walk away, else we could kiss this home ownership thing bye-bye! But I digress.

Michael’s offered up most of the supplies, but an impromptu stain made up of paints and mediums from under the sink helped accomplish that rustic vibe that Mr. 406 loves oh-so-much.a little glue

This seriously might be one of the simpler projects I’ve ever whipped up, but it was still loads of fun warning Jeff to “stay out of the kitchen!” whilst making it.stamp padmy fav nerd

And I got to put my awesome new stamp supplies to good use. Nerds + Crafters = True Love Always.and done

And VOILA! 406 media attains its first (and Jeff claims only [so sweet!]) sign! Not only am I grateful to Jeff, as he literally built Buoy Bird for me, but I am so proud of him and his accomplishments. A sweet little sign is the least I could do to show him my love and support.406 media

Show him a little love of your own and check out all of his work over at his website. Tell him the grumbly rainy-day gal sent ya ;)

*(ahem! The first being me, of course! ;) )

April 10th, 2011 – monthly love

SIX MONTHS! WOO! Six months is a milestone in my opinion, so we are gonna once again celebrate the love and talent of Mr. and Mrs. Madden!

Forgive me, readers and M&K: I’m a little sore today, as I partied along to one of the best east coast bands last night, Slowcoaster. So if I’m lacking in the words and the story-telling, you know why ;)boots

The 10th of the month crept up on me this time! I suspect this is how it’ll be Matt and Kim: the time flying by, and you guys enjoying every second of your together-dom. So in the spirit of time passing, I thought I’d share some of K+M’s subjects that have definitely seen their fair share of time.old docktins

Gritty and old and romantic in the most un-obvious way. Me likey. The nostalgia of things and places like these stirs something deep within me; you know that they have seen many great stories, and their history inspires the imagination. Kim and Matt are the best at capturing this beauty.cornfield

A step back in time. Nova Scotians are so lucky to be able to access these time-worn places; places that seem frozen in their former glory. A living museum. I can’t wait to get back to explore the back roads, walk along a cow path or two, and definitely root around for some vintage finds.suitcase

Well, I hope you found a similar Sunday calm that I did through this set of photos. I introduced Matt and Kim’s work on BB by saying they evoke a nostalgic feeling within me, and I’ll stick to that story again and again. Thank you guys for giving me a touchstone to bring me back to my slower, simpler roots.

March 10th, 2011 – monthly love

Happy Five Month Anni’ Matt and Kim!

For those of you who are new to Buoy Bird, Matt and Kim (Vallis) Madden are two LOVELY photographers from Halifax, Nova Scotia, who I was lucky enough to grow up with. Even furthering that luck, Matt and Kim allow me to use their work in all Buoy Bird designs: a priceless gift. I have always felt that Matt and Kim’s work reflects the feel I want to achieve through BB. I even referred to their work for inspiration before Buoy Bird’s birth. So! On the 10th of every month, I do a little shout out to these two fabulous people, both to honor their work, and to honor the day of their marriage (October 10th, 2010).a foggy day

This month, I wanted to feature Matt and Kim’s most beautiful subjects: each other! Not only is this power couple blessed with amazing talent, but they are very easy on the eyes as well!snowy kimkim at work

I can only assume that working together brings out the best in both Kim and Matt. The emotion that they are able to show AND capture is just plain magic.matt upclose

It shows in their work how much fun Matt and Kim are able to have as a couple with a similar interest in photography. They trust each other, feeling free to play, explore, and look deep into each other’s souls (see above!).ghost kim

They also get to share some pretty priceless moments together. I imagine one of them is always with camera in hand, so that they never have to say, “Aw, I wish I had a photo of that!”matt get a nutkim leaves

To me, there is something very timeless about Kim and Matt, both as individuals, and as a couple. They are both kind, smart, and intuitive, and I think this shows in their photos of each other, as well as of their other subjects.matt in the treeskim fire

And it could never be said that they are lacking in knowledge of atmosphere. Seriously, if a TV show served up this photo as their promo poster, I would watch it.dark matt

And Kim is a down-right Betty. Classic.classic kim

All in all, Matt and Kim remind me of how wonderful it is work with someone you love, as well as someone who understands you as an artist (something I have been blessed with with Jeff). The best stuff comes when you can be honest, open, and uninhibited with the ones you love and trust, and Matt and Kim’s work is the very proof of that.matt and kim

Happy Five Months guys! xo
